The Chattogram Commonwealth War Cemetery is a memorial of Commonwealth War Graves Commission which is commonly known as Chattogram War Cemetery.

Location:

Commonwealth War Cemetery is located at 19 Badshah Mia road of Dampara area. It is 22 km north of Chattogram Airport and 8 km from the Chattogram Port. The place was formerly a huge paddy field, although it is now a well developed area and considered as the city center.

History:

Chattogram War Cemetery was created by the British army at the end of World War II. During the war the pioneer camp of the Fourteenth Army of the allied force was set up in Chittagong along with facilities for army training and the British General Hospital No. 152. The hospital remained operative from December 1944 to October 1945. A large number of soldiers were sent back to the country after recovering from the wounded condition at that time. After the end of World War II, a group of British Army established this graveyard  to show honour for the soldiers and others who died in that battle. Initially 400 corpses were buried in this cemetery under the supervision of the army. At the end of the war the additional corpses were also brought to this cemetery from other temporary burial places in Lusai, Dhaka, Khulna, Jashore, Cox's Bazar, Dhowa Palang, Dohazari, Rangamati and Patiya. Now there are 731 Commonwealth burials, 17 of which are unidentified. There are a further 20 foreign nationals burials including Dutch and Japanese soldiers who were killed in World War II. Among the soldiers buried, there are 378 British nationals, 25 Canadians, 9 Australians, 2 from New Zealand, 214 of undivided India, 11 from East Africa, 90 from West Africa, 2 from Burma (Myanmar), 1 from the Netherlands and 19 from Japan. According to the profession, there are 543 soldiers, 194 pilots and 14 sailors. 4 civilians were also buried at this graveyard. Besides, there is a memorandum of the Second World War (1939-1945) of Chattogram-Bombay.

Description:

The War Cemetery is located in hillside sloping place in the southwest corner of Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The environment of the entire cemetery area is pleasant, solemn and tranquil at the same time. By walking a little way away from the main entrance of the War Cemetery, you will notice two small brick chapels and a metal gate. There is a memorial book in the chapel on the right hand. Nearly 6500 sailors and naval personnel of Indian merchant ship were killed during World War II, whose dead bodies have never been found. This memorial book contains their names and designations. The cemetery registrar is kept at the chapel on the left hand. The names, designations and briefs of the buried army members have been well-described in this register. A spectacular cross-marked altar will be seen in the middle of the graveyard from the gate. Then there is a small prayer house on the east. There is an open field and beautiful garden just outside the War Cemetery. There are forty species of trees in the beautiful natural environment of the Cemetery. There are pine or fir trees, garjan, mahogany, eucalyptus, palm trees. Apart from this, hundreds of native and foreign flower trees, including Gandharaj, Belly, Patabahar, Lantana, Rose, Letterlif have created an indescribable divine fascination in the cemetery. The graves are carefully arranged in rows at the burial ground. The names of the martyrs are written on each grave. Many tourists come to watch the burials standing on the banks of the hill at the afternoon.
